How To Clean A Mattress
If you have a bed wetter, cleaning a mattress stained with urine is inevitable at some time. There are several ways to tackle this. Soak up as much urine as possible using a thick towel. The urine will have sunk quite deeply into the mattress, so press hard on the stain to force the liquid to the surface. If you are treating it as soon as the accident occurs, once the mattress is just damp, all you probably need to do is sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda, which will absorb the remaining urine. Leave to dry and vacuum thoroughly to remove all the powder. Some people like to spray the stain with white vinegar and mop thoroughly before applying the bicarbonate of soda. If the stain is dry, dampen it with water and rub gently with Borax to fade the stain before applying bicarbonate of soda. Old stains are difficult to move and it may be necessary to use a proprietary cleaner. Enzymatic cleaners work well. Special cleaners for treating dog and cat stains are available from pet stores. Finally you could try to bleach any stubborn stains using hydrogen peroxide dabbed on the stain to fade it. Care should be taken not to overdo this and fade or weaken the fabric. It should then be treated with bicarbonate of soda and vacuumed. Always wear protective gloves when using any cleaner and remember that skin can be sensitive. If in doubt do not use. This site does not accept liability for any action taken. A variety of mattress protectors can be bought online. If you choose a rubber sheet, it can move around and not protect the whole mattress. Placing an old bath towel that is easy to wash, between the protector and the bed sheet, will absorb any urine running across the rubber. Using a bed wetting alarm may prevent the need to clean a mattress and is well worth trying.
