Bed Wetting Older Children and Teens

Bed wetting older children/teenagers are often deeply embarrassed by the problem. Many parents find coping with the psychological effect on their child is as difficult as the problem itself. The children feel they cannot discuss it with their peers. Their social activities become restricted, making them withdraw further into themselves.
Firstly parents must confirm with their doctor that there is no physical cause needing medical attention and ask for advice on coping.
Secondly they must reassure the child that although most people are dry at night, it is not an uncommon problem. Many bed wetting older children have parents who also bed wet and the parents can use this to boost their child.

There are a number of aids available to cope with bed wetting. Waterproof pads to protect mattresss, night diapers or alarms, either attached to the bedding or to nightclothes. Many children prefer to wear a watch with an alarm or vibrator to wake them at set intervals before they bed wet, giving them time to use the bedroom. Being in control helps the child feel adult and gives confidence. Some children are very heavy sleepers and there are alarms with a volume control.

Night diapers are available in all sizes for children and adults . Some are designed to look like ordinary pants. These are useful for when children and teens are away from home, but they do not train the child to stop bed wetting. However, combined with a watch, they can help prevent embarrassment when on a sleepover or at camp.

Parents should always be aware of how sensitive a child may be feeling about their bed wetting. Never make an issue of it or allow siblings to tease, even if it is not meant unkindly.
