Bed Wetting Children

Bed wetting is not a problem under the age of about 6 years, just a nuisance. Children have to learn bladder control and realise that they need to get up and go to the bathroom or use a potty. Most children are dry when they are about 6 years old, although they may have the occasional lapse, for example the night before starting a new school. If they are not dry by this time you should talk to your physician to check there is not a physical problem.

To avoid wet beds, some parents make the mistake of leaving their children in diapers at night long after they are dry during the day. If a child seems able to control their bladder during the day, then they should see if the child can also be dry at night. A mattress protector will mean that only a sheet will need changing if an accident occurs.

Bed Wetting Solutions

Becoming dry at night should never be made an issue and there are a number of things you can do to help your child.
  • If your child wets the bed never make him embarrassed or feel that he is being dirty. Explain that it is not important and the bed can be quickly remade.
  • If your child remains dry, remember to praise.
  • Having too much to drink before going to bed will fill the bladder.
  • Use the bathroom before going to bed.
  • Use lights to make it easy to reach the bathroom or provide a potty if you are worried about stairs or any other hazard.
  • Be patient if you are woken during the night whether it is due to bed wetting or because they need help going to the bathroom.

Finally remember that even when children are dry there are bound to be occasions when there is an accident.

If your child continues wetting the bed you should consult your physician. Bed wetting alarms can be useful and there are a number of different types available on the market.
