Bedwetting BoysBed wetting boys are far more common than girls who bed wet. As there is often a genetic component many boys will have a father or relative who also bedwet. Most will outgrow the problem. Boys tend to develop slower than girls and they may be a little older before they become dry. Many parents think that bedwetting is caused by emotional problems. This is not generally the reason although stressful situations can trigger off bed wetting even when a child is normally dry, for example when starting school. There are a number of things you can do to help your child.
He may have a small bladder or slower physical development. Do not allow him to drink too much before going to
bed, although of course he should not be thirsty. If your boy does not become dry at night or you are at all worried, you must talk to your physician to check that there is no physical problem. He will advise whether the bed wetting is part of your child's normal development or whether he needs some form of treatment. Medication may be prescribed although not all parents like to give drugs to a small child. Bed alarms have proved to be successful, waking the child at the first hint of moisture. Hypnosis is also a possible treatment and there as been some research showing it is successful in some cases.
