Adult Bed Wetting - Adult Enuresis

Adult bed wetting is one of the most embarrassing conditions to suffer from. It can result in lack of self esteem, an inability to form relationships or the breakdown of an existing relationship. Sufferers, fearing mockery, may isolate themselves to the point of loneliness, Taking holidays or staying with a friend is not an option as far as they are concerned. Embarrassment can prevent a sufferer from seeking help. Yet adult bed wetting is not that uncommon and there are a number of treatment you can try, either to cure or at least reduce the inconvenience and anxiety it can cause.
Research has shown that bedwetting is often inherited, many sufferers have a parent or relative who also bed wet.

The condition must be discussed with your physician to ascertain whether there is a physical cause that can be treated. If there is no apparent cause he will recommend ways that may help to overcome the problem. Methods may include

  • Medication
  • Exercises to train bladder control
  • Pelvic exercises for women to strengthen muscles
  • Hypnosis - Hypnotherapy may help with treating enurosis. If you decide to try you should check that the therapist is qualified. Do not just take their word, check with the qualifying authority and that it is also reputable

Bed Wetting Alarms

There are two types of alarms:
  • Wired bed wetting alarms.
  • Wireless bed wetting alarms.

Alarms can be very effective in reducing or stopping bed wetting. The idea is to trigger an alarm as soon as moisture is felt. Over a period of time the brain is trained to recognise the alarm and respond by controlling the bladder. Hopefully, after some time, the brain will react before urinating. This can take from a few days to a few weeks. If the bedwetting does stop, it may be necessary to occasionally used an alarm again if the condition re-occurs. Many of the wireless alarms are designed for children, but there are companies providing alarms for adult enuresis suffers.

Adult Incontinence Diapers At Night

Using adult incontinence diapers at night does not help overcome the problem, but it does prevent soiling the bedclothes and waking to the discomfort of a soggy sheet. Adult diapers come in all sizes and are very useful for the elderly who have developed a weak bladder. If you do not like the idea of wearing a diaper a rubber mattress protector will protect the bed.
